CARFAX is a popular reporting service that provides information about a used vehicle’s past. The report includes various information such as if the vehicle has been in an accident, an odometer discrepancy or had an airbag deployment. While this information can be great for a potential buyer of a used car, it can negatively impact your vehicle’s resale value if it contains negative information. A common question we often get is, “Are Auto Hail Repair claims reported to CARFAX?”
While not set in stone, the answer is: Not Likely.
The Dent Company (TDC) does NOT report to CARFAX. We restore your vehicle back to the condition it once was before the hail damage occurred.
According to the CARFAX website:
CARFAX® receives data from more than 100,000 different sources including every U.S. and Canadian provincial motor vehicle agency plus many police and fire departments, collision repair facilities, auto auctions, and more.
While some insurance companies volunteer information to CARFAX, it is uncommon for them to report auto hail repair claims. CARFAX also receives information through accident reports, auctions and collision centers or body shops.
Auto hail repair claims are reported to CARFAX if:
Auto Hail Repair Claims will be reported to CARFAX if your vehicle is totaled. If the cost of repairing the hail damage exceeds the vehicle’s value then the car will be reported as a total loss or “Totaled.” If you are still making payments on your vehicle, you may owe more than it is worth. If your vehicle is totaled by hail damage, the insurance company will pay out the vehicle’s actual value and not the amount you owe.
CARFAX confirms this:
Hail Damage Title -The Vehicle sustained major damage due to hail. In most states, hail damage titles are issued when the cost of repairing the vehicle for safe operation exceeds its fair market value.
The auto hail repair process we use is called Paintless Dent Repair (PDR). It the preferred method for hail dent removal as it preserves your factory paint and vehicle’s value. Most importantly, it is also less expensive than a traditional body shop would typically charge. We gently “Massage” the dent out using our highly specialized tools and techniques that we have developed over the years as auto hail repair experts. A body shop may have to fill, sand and replace body parts and thus, more expensive. The cost of going to a body shop for auto hail repair may cause your vehicle to be totaled where we could have prevented it.

I had hail damage to my 2018 Honda Pilot. It was repaired using PDR through CarStar in London west , Ontario.
Today I went to trade my vehicle. I told them about the $10,000. 00 hail repair and they said my vehicle would be devalued by $4000. 00 because of the damage.
Will this repair show on a Carfax report?

Probably not. Hail damage will usually not show up on a CARFAX report unless your vehicle was totaled or it was reported by the shop you took it to. Insurance companies usually don’t report hail damage and dealerships repair their own vehicles with PDR. We do it all the time and we don’t report to CARFAX.
